TRIP DESCRIPTION:

This journey involves a spectacular opportunity to see a great deal of Morocco all within one full day. It is the ideal trip for those who do not wish to spend a few nights sleeping out in the desert and want to be back in Marrakech for an evening eating out.

The day begins early as we will be leaving Marrakech before 8.00 am and our drive will then take us across the High Atlas Mountains. The rugged beauty and height of these peaks will have you glued to the window in our minibus as we snake through the mountain roads.

There are several small Berber villages along the route and we will get a chance to stop a take some photographs of the elevated scenery before making our way to the Kasbah at Ait Ben Haddou. It will be another couple of hours before we reach here but the scenery will remain stunning throughout.

The Kasbah at Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified village which holds about half a dozen market areas and merchant houses. Our tour around this old building will be guided. Like Ouarzazate – which will be the next stop on this tour – Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou is a very popular location for Hollywood film crews and production companies.

You will see exactly why it makes a great setting for a number of films set in biblical times, ancient Arabic legend or movies set thousands of year ago. Sodom and Gomorrah (1963), The Man Who Would Be King (1975) and The Jewel of the Nile (1985) all made use of the ancient fortified village here at Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou.

Our day of adventure then moves onto Ouarzazate, where we’ll tour around this city and see the film studios. Ouarzazate is a much-loved location by film production, many of whom specifically come here because of the ancient buildings, golden landscapes and stunning scenery. One feels as though you have taken a trip back in time as you explore the ancient Kasbahs, golden clay buildings and don’t be surprised to see a Hollywood film crew shooting a movie here.

Some of the blockbuster movies shot in this location include the Bond classic Living Daylights (1987), Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988).

ADVENTURE ALONG TIZI N’ TICHKA PASS

There is one road trip in Morocco that is not only takes you to your destination but has views and sights one has to experience to believe. The road was constructed in 1936 by the French, and links the great city of Marrakech to Ouarzazate. It takes travelers on a journey of adventure, beauty and breathtaking views, allowing visitors to experience a historical and spectacular part of the country. Locals met along the way make the expedition even more spectacular. This famous road is called Tizi n’ Tichka Pass, and is a safe and exciting way to explore Morocco.

Atlas Film Studios

You can’t visit Essaouira and not climb the ramparts. Constructed in the 1760s, the walls were originally built as city defenses. This is where the Medina meets the Atlantic – the crash of the waves and the sunset you’ll encounter, if you stay long enough, are what you’ll remember. Don’t miss this magical place!

unseco HERITAGE kSAR aIT bEN hADDOU

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Aït Benhaddou was once a major stop along the caravan route between Marrakech and the Sahara. The striking visage of southern Moroccan architecture is thought to be 17th-century, and contains a mosque, two cemeteries (Jewish and Muslim), a public square, and areas for threshing grain outside of the ramparts. Despite not being completely abandoned, the earthen architecture is vulnerable to weather and lack of care. While the site has maintained its authenticity, lack of maintenance and its sparsity of inhabitants led to serious deterioration. Assigned a five-year plan by officials, the ksar received some care and restoration between 2007 and 2012, using as much wood and earthen techniques as possible to keep the site as historically preserved. One of the remaining families opened a traditional café to give visitors an overview of the ancient lifestyle in the fortress. A way to preserve the tradition and heritage.

Kasbah Taourirt

Kasbah Taourirt is one of the most beautiful places in Morocco and it is locaed near Ouarzazate. It was built by the Glaoui and today it is a historical monument giving the tribute them. Kasbah Taourirt is set between the wonderful mountains and the awe-inspiring Sahara desert. Its closely set houses and dignified towers made of shalk and sand mixture blend into the surrounding landscape. You have the opportunity to walk into the spectacular building and experience the real ancient kasbah. The Kasbah has almost three hundered rooms and you will love their great decoration. There is a cafe nearby where you can relax and maybe watch a sunset from its terrace.
